“Perimeter” explores space, scale, perception and dislocation. A kind of video game aesthetic oscillates between reality and CGI with the overhead drone camera with the artist walking within a bleak concrete background. It lead us to perhaps question what we are seeing with confusion between the real and the unreal. The foley sound track of echoing footsteps further disrupts the location, conflicting with the landscape. The filmed area is a large multi-storey office tower construction area in southeast Calgary that stalled in 2014 due to the economic market conditions. Against this locale, the environment is so minimal with raw concrete forms that its location could be almost anywhere. The video frame all run in sync and are repeated through multiples panels, but rotated in different directional headings. The construction project still stands unfinished in 2022.
The project stems from studies as a mentee under the City of Calgary’s Public Art Mentorship program. The video was shot by Alex Robinson, with experimental sound tracks from brokenpaws. Thanks to Jeff Schram of Remington Developments of Calgary for his assistance in providing access to the construction site.
